Origin
Natuur Kabinet only works with butterflies & insects from butterfly / insect farms. Here they are bred in a protected environment. The area of these farms covers a number of football fields. Once the caterpillars pupate, some are collected to be sent to zoos, museums & collectors. A part of the adult butterflies are released in the wild and the deceased butterflies are collected to be sold. Supporting these farms the local population have a source of income for themselves and their families. There are hundreds of butterfly farms around the world, most are located in tropical areas near the rainforests. The farms not only protect the butterfly populations, but also help protecting rainforests, plants, flowers etc.
The first phase of breeding butterflies includes obtaining a pair of fertile female butterflies, which are placed in a large stay with their required host plants, where they lay their eggs. A single female butterfly can lay between 100 and 500 eggs during her life, so few female butterflies are needed to start new butterfly populations. Butterflies in the wild only have a survival rate of 5% from egg to adult, while butterflies that are raised in captivity have a survival rate of 95%. Most tropical butterflies only live for a few days up to 2 weeks.
Birds come from breeders, zoos and from damage control.
