Maintenance taxidermy

  • Do not place taxidermy in direct sunlight. This will discolour the specimen.
  • Do not place taxidermy in damp or dark rooms and not in the kitchen.
  • Do not place taxidermy in areas where smoking is taking place.
  • Dust the specimen regularly with a feather duster (preferably made of ostrich feathers) or soft brush. Do not go against the direction of the feathers/hair and avoid contact with your hands. This can make the feathers/hair greasy.
  • Grab the specimen at the bottom by the pedestal, not the animal itself. Do not change the position of the specimen. It is mounted and dried in this position. It can break off when bent.
  • The specimen is treated with an insect repellent. The effects will reduce over time. Therefore, spray the specimen once a year with an insect repellent that does not stain (for example trophy protector from Bouten & zoon) Spray evenly over the specimen from a distance.
  • Watch out for pests! Does the specimen lose feathers/hair, and do you see a pile of dust or sawdust under the specimen? This could be a sign of pests. Put the entire specimen in the freezer for a week at -18 degrees Celsius as soon as possible and then spray it with an insect repellent.
  • All these points also apply to butterflies/insects. In addition, they are sensitive to dust mites. Dust mites only occur when the room is too humid, this is often not noticeable. Therefore, regularly check for small white dots in the glass dome/frame/box etc. If you suspect dust mites, freeze the entire product at -18 degrees Celsius for at least 1 week.
